Being in the Hospitality industry, i've worked for companies that provided good benefits, and some that did not. Choosing a good company to work for is half of the battle, then working hard within these companies actually does pay off. I believe on reward through good behavior and accomplishment.
Also as Housekeeping Managers we know that our staff is usually the lowest paid employee's at the hotel and work very, very hard but I don't believe unions are the answer.
I work hard for my staff to ensure proper increases when it comes to annual reviews, and I believe it is all of our responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves, but I don't believe in giving something away just because "an employee" is also a union member.
