The body of Daniel Templeton, 38, was discovered shortly before 10.30am on Monday, December 16, in the Channels Lodge en-suite room in Belsteads Farm Lane, Little Waltham. “My staff are very distressed,” said Channels Lodge co-owner Simon Larner. “The hotel’s thoughts are with the gentleman who died.”
Mr Larner stressed the man had no connection with the hotel before his visit. “The housekeeper who found Mr Templeton has got a lovely family who have supported her and she is doing OK considering the circumstances,” added Mr Larner, 49. “We are a professional, proper and well-run hotel and we will carry on to be that regardless of what has happened.”
Mr Templeton, of Larkswood Road, Chingford, booked a room for two for the Sunday night via e-mail. But upon arrival, he said it was unlikely his girlfriend would join him. He paid the single rate in the evening, saying he planned to leave at about 7am the following morning. An inquest opened on Christmas Eve recorded that Mr Templeton was found hanged in the en-suite room. It confirmed the coroner for Essex Caroline Beasley-Murray was awaiting toxicology reports, a cause of death from the post-mortem examination and as to whether the man was known to mental health services. In a meeting after the incident, Mr Templeton’s parents apologised to Mr Larner’s wife and hotel co-owner Sara.
A police spokesman added: “Police were contacted at about 10.30am on December 16 with a report of a sudden death at a property in Belsteads Farm Lane, Little Waltham. “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
